Leigh- I so appreciate the honesty of this piece, particularly the messy antic you’ve experienced that seem to follow a non-linear path caused by a disinterested supervisor.

I recognise several parts of this from my own experience! Luckily I had an excellent dissertation supervisor who was incredibly supportive but I really struggled with reading and writing a more scholarly style. Right to the end I was getting comments that my writing wasn’t academic enough - fine! I’m happy writing popular history 😊

I’m so happy to hear you had a supportive dissertation supervisor - it really makes all the difference, as I discovered during my MA studies and my dissertation supervisor was amazing! 🤩 And your popular historical writings are fabulous, so definitely don’t take those criticisms to heart!

Thank you Leigh for opening up about your life in this way. I have a daughter who is currently studying at University and, I know, finding it a struggle at times. Like you, I hope this article will show she is not alone.
